SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Jim Carlin, the conservative Republican candidate running for the U.S. Senate in Iowa, on Friday called for filing articles of impeachment against federal judges who have undermined the rule of law.
Carlin’s call-to-action comes after a federal judge in Illinois issued a temporary restraining order on Thursday evening to halt the Trump administration’s plan to deploy National Guard troops in the Chicago region.
“History teaches us that impeachment isn’t just a tool—it’s a Constitutional safeguard for democracy,” said Carlin. “Under the good-behavior clause, it exists to remove judges who abuse their power. The Founders never intended lifetime appointments to be shields for misconduct.”
Carlin said he would make judicial accountability a defining mission in the U.S. Senate, pledging to lead a coordinated review of lower-court rulings where judges have “crossed the line from interpreting the law to legislating from the bench.”
He called for public hearings, fact-finding investigations, and, when warranted, the filing of articles of impeachment.
“A senator’s duty is to protect the people’s Constitution from activist overreach,” Carlin said. “If judges are rewriting laws or ignoring constitutional limits, Congress must act—period.”
Carlin noted Rep. Ashley Hinson’s public denunciations of activist judges but pointed out that, despite her rhetoric, she has taken no formal action.
“Talk without action changes nothing, and Ashley has had plenty of time to file articles of impeachment in the House, but has failed to do so,” Carlin said. “Iowa needs leaders willing to put accountability ahead of politics.”
An Army veteran and small-town attorney, Carlin said impeachment is not partisanship but a solemn Constitutional duty.
“Iowa families deserve judges who apply the law as written, not as imagined,” he said. “When I’m in the Senate, I’ll push for the investigations, hearings and Constitutional votes needed to restore trust in the judiciary.”
Carlin emphasized that decisive leadership is the only way to curb the growing power of unelected judges.
“Every day Congress delays, judicial activism grows stronger,” Carlin warned. “It’s time to stand up, not stand by.”
