SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Jim Carlin, the conservative Republican candidate running for U.S. Senate in Iowa, criticized Ashley Hinson as a phony following the endorsement by President Donald Trump.
“Ashley Hinson never supported Trump and didn’t say one word on his behalf until after the caucuses. She is an actress reading D.C.’s script—she’s not a conservative, not America First and certainly not MAGA,” Carlin said.
Since joining the race last week, Hinson’s campaign has racked up establishment support, with the vast majority of her endorsements coming from Washington, D.C., from so-called Republicans, who lack actual conservative values.
Additionally, since joining the race, Hinson has already publicly acknowledged that she has four fundraisers working on her campaign. Three of those fundraisers are focused purely on Washington, D.C. money, and the fourth is focused on national donations, with nearly all efforts dedicated to outside of Iowa.
“Is Hinson running for Iowa or for Washington, D.C.?” Carlin asked.
Carlin’s campaign highlighted Hinson’s record as evidence of her disconnect from Iowa’s conservative base.
“Immediately after the contested 2020 election, Hinson voted to certify the election. She then wrote a letter to President Joe Biden expressing willingness to work with him. She also supported Liz Cheney after Cheney voted to impeach Trump. Additionally, Hinson voted to codify same-sex marriage, which undermines religious liberty and states’ rights,” Carlin said.
A staunch advocate for campaign finance reform and a strong proponent for election integrity, Carlin contrasted his record with Hinson’s.
“While Hinson eagerly certified the 2020 election, I was in the Iowa Senate fighting for President Trump’s efforts to get a fair shake on election transparency,” Carlin said. “As I recall, Trump called for us to ‘primary the hell’ out of RINOs like Hinson, so I’m answering that call.”
According to conservative watchdog groups, Hinson’s ratings are abysmal: 45 percent from the Freedom Index for Constitutional votes, 49 percent from the Club for Growth, 59 percent from Heritage Action, and 67 percent from Conservative Review’s Liberty Score. Reports also indicate Hinson caucused for Nikki Haley before Iowa’s 2024 Republican presidential primary.
Carlin, a Sioux City attorney and former Iowa state senator (2017-2023), is a U.S. Army veteran, husband, father and grandfather. He supported Iowa’s Constitutional carry law, opposes endless wars, and champions fiscal responsibility, secure borders and limited government. His campaign urged Iowa voters to reject Hinson’s D.C.-backed bid and support a proven conservative committed to faith, family and freedom.
